  • Operating System Instances: Because VMs virtualize the hardware resources that serve the operating systems and applications, the actual machines that run the virtual desktops can be of any type, including desktop or laptop PCs, tablets, and even mobile phones. They no longer even need to meet the minimum requirements for running an operating system and applications. The cost savings that result from this capability are one of VDI's selling points.
  • How does VDI compare with desktop virtualization? VDI is not the same as desktop virtualization as a category. A single desktop computer runs a single guest virtual machine in desktop virtualization. VDI, on the other hand, is an alternative to other types of virtual desktop delivery (like hosted shared solutions that connect endpoints to a shared desktop or local desktop virtualization where desktop environment runs directly on the client). VDI migrates the desktop operating system from a local computer to a shared hosting environment.
